| Summary, etc. | Les limites orientales du continent européen n’ont été longtemps qu’une question de géographie assez académique, mais aujourd’hui et plus encore sans doute dans l’avenir, c’est désormais un problème géopolitique d’importance, et pas seulement à cause de la polémique suscitée par la candidature de la Turquie à l’Union européenne. Ce problème va se poser tôt ou tard pour la Russie. Les dirigeants russes n’envisagent pas pour le moment une telle candidature, pour ne pas sembler renoncer à la grandeur passée d’une superpuissance et à des pratiques politiques encore fort peu soucieuses des droits de l’homme. Mais l’élargissement accéléré de l’UE pose le problème de l’immense Russie en Europe et donc celui des limites de ce continent. Une Russie convalescente, au territoire moins vaste mais mieux organisé, pourrait raisonnablement demander son entrée dans l’UE. |

| Summary, etc. | Will it be, in the future, a very large Europe from the Atlantic to the Pacific? The eastern boundaries of the European continent have been for a long time a rather academic geographical matter, but today and probably even more in the future, it has and will become a quite important geopolitical problem, and the polemic raised by the Turkish candidature to the European Union (EU) is not the only reason. Sooner or later, this problem will concern Russia. At this time the Russian leaders do not foresee such candidature, not to seem to renounce to a past greatness of a superpower and to political rules not really taking in consideration human rights. But the accelerated enlargement of the EU borders raises the question of the immense Russia in Europe, and thus of this continent’s limits. A convalescent Russia, with reduced territory but better organized, could reasonably ask its entry in the EU. |
