| Summary, etc. | Si l’on a de tout temps admis l’existence de vieillards aux âges extraordinaires, aucune époque n’a connu plus de « macrobes » ou « longévites » fameux que l’époque moderne, au point que le XVIIIe siècle voit paraître plusieurs ouvrages recensant jusqu’à presque deux mille d’entre eux. Ce sont les inévitables patriarches bibliques, mais aussi nombre de gens ordinaires. Le plus connu est l’Anglais Thomas Parr, qui serait né en 1483 et mort en 1635. Mais comme pour tant d’autres, son existence véridique ne repose jamais que sur la foi en témoignages anciens, rapportés par des gens qui le connaissent eux-mêmes d’autres témoins… On ne peut en retirer qu’une certitude : les hommes du temps moderne avaient besoin de croire en cette forme particulière de merveilleux, comme, au fond, toujours notre époque… |

| Summary, etc. | Though the existence of extraordinarily elderly people has been admitted throughout all ages, the Modern History accounts for the most famous persons who attained a century and upwards, as shown in several works written during the XVIIIth century which make mention of the aged numbering almost two thousand. There are of course the obvious biblical patriarchs, but also many ordinary people. The most famous is the Englishman Thomas Parr, who would be born in 1483 and deceased in 1635. But like many others, his truthful existence is based only on the accuracy of old accounts stories told by people who heard them from other storytellers. The only certainty that can be drawn from this is that the Modern Age population needed to believe in this particular form of supernatural, like today’s population continues to do so. |
