| Summary, etc. | Partant d’une distinction entre deux fonctions majeures de la rhétorique antique, la psychagogie et l’argumentation, cet article s’attache à montrer comment Platon radicalise le privilège conféré par Gorgias à la psychagogie et procède à une extension de la rhétorique au-delà de son exercice politique et judiciaire. Le Phèdre met à l’épreuve la rhétorique comme art (ou technè) et l’assujettit à une connaissance préalable des âmes. La rhétorique peut se prévaloir alors du statut d’une science, ce qui l’écarté singulièrement du domaine que lui assignent tant la sophistique qu’Aristote. Mais le soupçon subsiste, in fine, d’une instrumentalisation encore possible de cette rhétorique. |

| Summary, etc. | The Art of Speech in Plato’s PhaedrasHaving first made a distinction between two major functions of ancient rhetoric, namely psychagogia and argumentation, this paper sets out to show how Plato radicalised the prestige psychagogia had acquired with Gorgias, and extended the scope of rhetoric beyond its political and legal uses. Plato’s Phaedras tests rhetoric as an art form (as technè) and subordinates it to prior knowledge of the human soul. Thus it can claim scientific status. But while the domain assigned to rhetoric by the Sophists and Aristotle is considerably enlarged, a lingering suspicion remains that rhetoric may, after all, he simply a mere instrument. |
