| Summary, etc. | L’irruption de la modernité et du multiculturalisme ont entraîné l’affirmation du Moi kanak vis-à-vis de l’Autre allogène. Dans cette perspective, l’appropriation récente du mot kanak par les lointains descendants des premiers arrivants s’avère porteuse de sens. Or, le préambule de l’Accord de Nouméa prévoit dans son article 1.5. que « des signes identitaires du pays, nom, drapeau, hymne, devise, graphismes des billets de banque, devront être recherchés en commun, pour exprimer l’identité kanak et le futur partage entre tous ». Il s’avérait donc important de réaliser l’étymologie du terme kanak et de situer ce symbole identitaire par rapport à la mosaïque multiculturelle calédonienne. |

| Summary, etc. | From « Kanaka » to « Kanak » : the Use of a Generic Term to Meet Melanesian Identity ExpectationsThe upsurge of modernity and multiculturalism have led to the assertion of the Kanak Ego in relation to the non-indigenous Other. In this perspective, the recent appropriation of the Kanak word by the distant descendants of the first arrivals has proved to be a bearer of meaning. Indeed, article 1.5 of the preamble of the Noumea Agreement provides that « identifying symbols of the country, name, flag, anthem, currency, banknote illustrations, must be sought together, to express the Kanak identity and future sharing between all ». It was thus important to create the etymology of the Kanak term and to position this identifying symbol with regard to the multicultural Caledonian kaleidoscope. |
