| Summary, etc. | À partir de l’analyse d’une taxinomie populaire tunisienne concevant les Sfaxiens (les habitants de la ville de Sfax) comme des « gens travailleurs, économes et entrepreneurs », nous essayons de montrer :que les stéréotypes populaires se construisent toujours sur la base de différences socioculturelles caractérisant des groupes en compétition ;qu’un stéréotype socioculturel n’est pas quelque chose de statique, mais peut connaître des transformations profondes lorsque des événements historiques décisifs — ici le contexte colonial — modifient les rapports traditionnels entre les groupes concernés ;qu’autant les stéréotypes — lesquels procèdent, eux aussi, comme les concepts scientifiques, par une simplification extrême de la réalité objectivée — renvoient effectivement à quelques fragments vérifiables de la réalité ; autant ils sont démunis, du fait du processus même de leur construction sociale et de leurs usages divers par les acteurs sociaux, de tout système d’autorégulation définissant explicitement le nombre et la nature de liens interactifs potentiels pouvant exister entre les divers fragments de la réalité sociale auxquels ils renvoient. D’où à la fois leur côté trompeur et leur « vérité » partagée. |

| Summary, etc. | Genesis of a Tunisian Popular Stereotype in a Colonial Context and its EvolutionStarting from an analysis of popular Tunisian taxinomie which consider Sfaxians (the inhabitants of Sfax, a Tunisian town) as « economical, industrious and entreprising », we shall try to show that :Popular stereotypes are always built on a basis of socio-cultural differences which characterise the competing groups.A cultural stereotype is not static but can undergo substantial transformations when decisive historical events—in this instance, the colonial context—modify the traditional relations between the groups in question.Much as these stereotypes (which, like scientific concepts, use a process of extreme simplification of an objectified reality) effectively refer us to some tangible fragments of reality, they are (given the process of their social construction and their various uses by the social actors) deprived of any self-regulatory system explicitly defining the number and nature of the potential interactive links which might exist between the different fragments of the social reality to which they refer. Hence the possibility of at once speaking about their deceiving side and their mixed « truth ». |
