| Summary, etc. | Au-delà du chiffre des 70 % de locuteurs tahitianophones régulièrement avancé, une enquête linguistique en Polynésie française révélerait sans doute une grande hétérogénéité des niveaux de compétence en tahitien et en français ainsi que la diffusion d’un mélange appauvri français-tahitien. Le discours identitaire des intellectuels et l’action des instances territoriales, et plus récemment celle de l’État, ont redonné au tahitien un statut prestigieux, mais cela ne suffira peut-être pas à renverser la tendance au sein des foyers. Le bilinguisme pour tous reste cependant la meilleure option. Il faut éviter, d’une part, que le semi-linguisme ne se généralise et, d’autre part, que la maîtrise du français, qui donne accès aux postes de responsabilité, et celle du tahitien, qui confère la légitimité symbolique et politique maohi (littéralement, autochtone), ne soient réservées à une élite. L’école joue un rôle important dans la promotion du tahitien au côté du français, mais elle ne peut se substituer à la transmission au sein du giron familial qui seule garantit la construction d’une compétence native. |

| Summary, etc. | Tahitian : More Prestige, Less SpeakersIn spite of the regularly announced figure of 70 % tahitian-speakers in French Polynesia, a linguistic survey would probably reveal large differences in competence levels in Tahitian as well as the diffusion of a language which is a mixture of Tahitian and French. The commitment of both local institutions and French State has given Tahitian a prestigious status.But that may be not enough to undo the tendency in people’s homes. Still, the best option for everyone is to be bilingual. We need to avoid, on one hand, the spreading of semi-linguism and, on the other hand, that the mastery of French, which permits access to important jobs, and that of Tahitian, which confers both symbolic and political maohi (literally, native) legitimacy, are reserved for an elite. School plays an important role in promoting Tahitian beside French ; however, it cannot be more efficient than the family in transmitting the language and building up a native’s linguistic competence. |
