| Summary, etc. | Le cinéma américain est communément perçu comme instrumentalisé au profit de la puissance politique américaine, via l’imposition de représentations. Nous avons choisi de nous confronter à la représentation d’un facteur de puissance concret, à savoir le satellite, en partant d’une analyse des films eux-mêmes, et non des conditions sociologiques de leur production. Nous montrons ainsi le déploiement d’une représentation structurée des satellites dans les films américains ainsi que la stabilisation d’un code visuel. Pour autant cette représentation dégénère en fantasme à mesure qu’elle se déploie, ce qui correspond au fait que la représentation de ce vecteur de puissance n’est pas tant déterminée par une visée politique quelconque que par les contraintes de divertissement propres à ce cinéma. Les représentations sont structurées par les fictions dans lesquelles elles s’insèrent plus que dans un réseau d’intentions politiques. Ainsi la relation entre Hollywood et Washington paraît trop ambivalente pour être réduite à la subordination de l’un à l’autre, et il nous semble plus juste de construire l’hypothèse que les deux se déterminent mutuellement. |

| Summary, etc. | Satellites representation in US action moviesIt is commonly thought that American cinema is the instrument of the U.S. government, which uses it to impose a specific image of America on people. We chose to examine the image of a concrete power factor – satellites – based on an analysis of movies themselves rather than an analysis of the sociological context around their production. We therefore show that a standardized representation of satellites is portrayed in American movies and a visual code is now stabilized. Nevertheless, this representation degenerates progressively into a fantasy, due to the fact that it is not determined by any political vision but it is shaped by the specific constraints of filmed entertainment. Representations are structured according to the fiction they are part of – not by any network of political intentions. The relation between Hollywood and Washington appears too ambivalent to be considered as a subordination of one by the other. It seems to us that it is more relevant to build on the hypothesis that they determine each other. |
