| Summary, etc. | Avant la restauration de l’Empire en 1852, il y eut un précédent, puisqu’en revenant de l’île d’Elbe en 1815, Napoléon avait déjà restauré une première fois l’empire. Pourtant à aucun moment le terme de « second empire » n’a été employé pour désigner cette nouvelle phase politique. Napoléon a en effet recherché la continuité malgré le retour à l’esprit de 1789 et la rédaction d’une nouvelle constitution et s’est appuyé sur le principe de légitimité pour justifier son retour au pouvoir. Pourtant c’est bien un nouvel empire, avec de nouvelles institutions qu’il propose et qu’il lègue à son fils, en abdiquant, faisant de Napoléon II, empereur virtuel du 22 juin au 8 juillet 1815, le relais indispensable dans la continuité dynastique conduisant à Napoléon III. |

| Summary, etc. | There was a precedent before the restoration of the Empire in 1852. Indeed, when he came back from Elba in 1815, Napoleon had already restored the Empire a first time. Yet, never was the term « second empire » used to depict this new political era. Napoleon tried to achieve a form of continuity despite the general revival of the 1789 spirit and the writing of a new constitution. He relied on the principle of legitimacy to account for his return to power. However, what he suggested was actually a new empire, with new institutions. When he abdicated, he bequeathed it to his son, who became Napoleon II, a virtual emperor from June 22 to July 8 1815. The latter was the vital baton in the dynastic continuity which eventually led to Napoleon III’s reign. |
