| Summary, etc. | L’environnement maritime difficile des Îles Britanniques a stimulé l’activité hydrographique tout au long de l’ère de la voile. Une grande partie de ce travail a été menée par des praticiens civils jusqu’à l’avènement d’une spécialisation navale au xixe siècle. Sous la direction de l’amiral Beaufort, le premier relevé coordonné et intensif des eaux britanniques a commencé. Les avancées technologiques spectaculaires qui ont marqué la fin de la grande époque de la voile ont été de puissants moteurs de développement dans le domaine des levés hydrographiques et de la cartographie. |

| Summary, etc. | The challenging maritime environment of the British Isles stimulated hydrographic activity throughout the age of sail. Much of this work was conducted by individual civilian practitioners until the advent of a naval specialisation in the nineteenth century. Under Admiral Beaufort the first coordinated and intensive survey of British waters got underway. The dramatic technological advances which ultimately brought about the end of the great age of sail were powerful drivers of development in the field of survey and charting. |
