| Summary, etc. | En janvier 1717, La Varenne et Ricouart arrivaient à la Martinique en qualité d’administrateurs de la colonie, mais en étaient chassés par un soulèvement des colons quatre mois plus tard. Ce bref épisode permet de poser un regard sur les enjeux du commerce étranger dans les petites Antilles au début du xviiie siècle. Le postulat initial est de ne pas considérer uniquement le commerce étranger comme de la contrebande, mais comme une forme d’organisation complémentaire des échanges qui participait, malgré son illégalité, à la pérennisation du modèle colonial et au développement de l’économie de plantation esclavagiste. |

| Summary, etc. | In January 1717, La Varenne and Ricouart landed in Martinique as official agents of the colony, but were expelled four months later by a colonial uprising. This short period allows to consider the issues of foreign trade in the Lesser Antilles at the beginning of the 18th century. The starting point is to look at the foreign trade not only as smuggling but as a complementary way of commercial organization that, despite its illegality, contributed to the perpetuation of the colonial system and the development of the slave plantation economy. |
