| Summary, etc. | RésuméConstitutive de l’identité du socialisme français à travers l’héritage du XIXe siècle, la question économique apparaît, au sortir de l’expérience avortée du Front républicain, comme une importante pomme de discorde au sein de la mouvance socialiste. La représentation dominante dans la mémoire partisane demeure, aujourd’hui encore, celle d’une gauche socialiste comme théâtre, au tournant des années 1960, d’une nouvelle querelle des Anciens et des Modernes entre deux socialismes : l’un demeurant « avec son marxisme sur les bras », l’autre acquis aux vertus du réformisme économique. Régulièrement reprise par la droite mais aussi par la majeure partie des intellectuels acquis à la « gauche moderne », cette vision binaire empêche de saisir l’évolution, subtile mais réelle, du rapport de l’ensemble de la gauche socialiste à l’économie au début de la Ve République. |

| Summary, etc. | Economic issues belong to the socialist identity since the 19th century. From the early Fifth Republic they gave rise to serious quarrels within the French Socialist Left, notably because of the 1956 government’s failure. Now the socialist memory fuels the idea of a Socialist Left then split into two factions: the first one pleading for economic reformism based on “democratic planned economy”; the second one embodied by the SFIO Party looking back to Marxist economic principles. Such a view regularly used by the enemies of Socialist Left in the early 1960s prevents from probing a subtle but significant mutation in the socialist ways of approaching economy. |
