Sans chercher à lire la montée du Front national à travers une grille mono-causale, l’analyse proposée ici souligne la sensibilisation croissante de l’électorat à la question de l’immigration sur fond de crise économique à partir de la seconde moitié des années 1970 et affirme que le rapide échec de la politique de relance menée par la gauche à partir de 1981 semble avoir servi de catalyseur à l’émergence électorale de l’extrême droite deux ans plus tard. |

| Summary, etc. | Is there a connection between the Left’s return to power in 1981 and the electoral breakthrough of the extreme right two years later or is the proximity of these events in time merely coincidental? Without seeking to read the rise of the Front National in terms of a mono-causal interpretation, the analysis proposed here notes the growing importance of ethnically defined issues among the electorate from the late 1970s onwards against a background of economic downturn and suggests that the rapid failure of the economic recovery programme introduced by the Left in 1981 appears to have served as a catalyst for the electoral rise of the extreme right in 1983. |
