Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | In the history of the French intellectual life, publishers played the first part, especialy Gallimard. Temple of literature, this publishing house became, in the forties, as her main rivals (Minuit, Le Seuil, les PUF), the right place for geography, sociology, history, and above all, philosophy. Indeed, the strenght of Gallimard was based on its ability to discover and promote original intellectual works (Sartre, Camus, Simone Weil) caracterized by their mix of litterature and pure philosophy. Gallimard relied on some wonderful men (Paulhan, Groethuysen, Malraux) in order to select the best authors and books. Therefore the history of the editorial world, as micro creative spheres, is an important part of the history of the French intellectual life and of the power relations within it. |
