| Summary, etc. | Le parcours de Paul Painlevé montre l’importance de la médiatisation sur une carrière politique, en France, au cours du premier ingtième siècle. Mathématicien de renommée internationale, il fut député pendant ingt-trois ans, ministre à quatorze reprises et trois fois président du Conseil. Sont ici définis les raisons, les formes et les effets de la médiatisation d’un élu de gauche atypique en raison de son origine professionnelle. La « presse républicaine », qui s’était déjà montrée curieuse de son engagement dreyfusard puis de son soutien à l’aviation naissante, continua de porter un regard admiratif sur le mathématicien engagé en politique à partir de 1910. Pendant la Grande Guerre, le ministre des Inventions utilisa ce capital pour aloriser la science de guerre, puis le ministre de la Guerre pour populariser les réformes adoptées avec Pétain. Son étroite association avec la presse cartelliste lui permit de devenir l’un des triumviri de la nouvelle majorité portée au pouvoir en 1924. En 1933, l’écho donné par les journaux à ses funérailles nationales porta à la postérité une image gémellaire de savant moderne engagé au service de la respublica. L’intérêt des médias ne peut cependant être réduit à cette image lisse. Les journaux engagés aux extrêmes regrettèrent que le mathématicien ait abandonné la science pour la politique et se plurent à dénoncer, notamment dans des caricatures, les travers de celui qu’ils jugeaient tantôt trop enclin à la répression, tantôt pas assez ferme. |

| Summary, etc. | Paul Painlevé’s career path shows the impact of media coverage on a political career in France at the beginning of the 20th century. An internationally famous mathematician, he was a Member of Parliament for twenty-three years, minister fourteen times and Head of the Government three times. The reasons, forms and effects of the media coverage devoted to a member of the left-wing party with an unusual professional background are defined below. The republican press which had already shown curiosity about his commitment to the Dreyfuss cause as well as about his interest in the beginnings of aviation, continued to admire the mathematician who engaged in politics as from 1910. During the First World War, the Minister of Inventions used this know-how to support the science of war and then as Minister of War to propagate the reforms adopted with Pétain. His close association with the press supporting the Cartel des Gauches enabled him to become one of the triumviri of the new majority elected in 1924. In 1933, the reports made by journalists on his state funeral presented him to posterity as a brilliant modern scientist also serving the res publica. Nevertheless, the media’s interest cannot be reduced to this polished image. The extremist press regretted that the mathematician neglected the sciences in favor of politics and took pleasure in denouncing, especially through mocking cartoons, the faults of someone they considered to be either too disposed to repression or not firm enough. |
