| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’article propose un panorama de la recherche sur l’histoire polonaise durant la Première Guerre mondiale et s’intéresse, en particulier, à la question des nationalités ainsi qu’à celle de l’occupation par l’Allemagne et l’Autriche-Hongrie. La littérature générale sur le sujet est plutôt clairsemée et dans une large mesure le front Est durant la Grande Guerre est une terra incognita. Depuis la chute du rideau de fer, l’historiographie polonaise s’est surtout focalisée sur l’indépendance et la construction nationale, à travers une histoire politique et diplomatique. Dans ce contexte, les conflits du direct après-guerre étaient certes analysés, mais sans que cela ne remette en cause l’idée selon laquelle la Pologne n’avait même pas participé à la Grande Guerre, puisqu’il n’y avait pas d’État polonais, et ceci malgré le fait que presque 2,5 millions de Polonais servirent dans les armées des trois Empires orientaux. Une littérature détaillée est disponible sur les plans allemands concernant la Pologne, mais ce n’est pas le cas pour l’occupation austro-hongroise. Il existe de même des manques importants, en ce qui concerne l’histoire culturelle, l’histoire des Empires ou encore l’histoire du quotidien, des mentalités et des perceptions. Une des questions les plus intéressantes qu’il reste à poser est celle de l’inscription des années 1914-1918 dans un contexte plus large, depuis la politique de colonisation jusqu’à la Seconde Guerre mondiale, du point de ue des occupants comme de celui des occupés. |

| Summary, etc. | This article presents an overview of the historiography of Poland in the First World War, which focuses particularly on questions of nationality and the German and Austro-Hungarian occupations. Overall, the literature is sparse, with the whole Eastern Front remaining a virtual terra incognita. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Polish historiography has dealt mainly with independence and nation building, approached from the stand oint of political and diplomatic history. Post-First World War conflicts have been examined, but in general the notion prevails that the country did not participate in the war, as no Polish state existed at the time – despite some 2.5 million Poles serving in the armies of the three Eastern empires. Detailed accounts have been written on German plans for occupied Poland, but not on the Austro-Hungarian occupation. Other important gaps exist in cultural and imperial history as well as in the history of everyday life, public attitudes and perceptions. An especially important gap yet to be filled is the integration of the war years into a wider context of colonial politics up to the Second World War, from the standpoint of the occupiers as well as the occupied. |
