| Summary, etc. | « Je pressens, je sens, j’annonce la venue et la présence dans la politique d’une couche sociale nouvelle [...] ! » La prophétie prononcée par Gambetta en 1872 est aujourd’hui souvent citée comme un exemple de la lucidité des pères fondateurs de la République, qui auraient habilement lié le destin du nouveau régime à celui des classes moyennes bientôt triomphantes. Mais c’est occulter l’ambivalence de la formule, dont Gambetta lui-même donne des interprétations divergentes à quelques années d’intervalle : appel à la révolution ou souci d’offrir à la République une nouvelle élite ? Alors que Gambetta opère son ralliement à l’opportunisme, il travaille à donner un nouveau sens à son propre discours. |

The prophecy uttered by Gambetta in 1872 is often cited to testify to the lucidity of the founding fathers of the Republic, who cleverly linked the fate of the new regime to that of the soon triumphant middle class. But this perspective tends to underestimate the ambivalence of the formula, which Gambetta himself explained in divergent ways over time: call for revolution or desire to give the Republic a new elite? While joining the Opportunist Republicans, Gambetta was working to give a new meaning to his own speech. |
