| Summary, etc. | En mai 1981, le ministre de l’Intérieur Gaston Defferre nomme Maurice Grimaud au poste de directeur de cabinet. Ce faisant, il recrute un haut fonctionnaire connu (presque une célébrité depuis son action en Mai 68 et les commémorations de 1978) et estimé tant par ses pairs que par les responsables politiques ; un haut fonctionnaire qui va imprimer un style particulier dans l’exercice de sa charge au point de paraître atypique. Mais le ministre et son directeur de cabinet s’avèrent parfaitement complémentaires ; ainsi, en dépit des nombreuses vicissitudes et de la lourdeur des fonctions assumées, Maurice Grimaud servira-t-il Gaston Defferre avec constance voire même fidélité, l’accompagnant en juillet 1984 dans ses nouvelles fonctions de ministre chargé du Plan et de l’Aménagement du territoire. |

| Summary, etc. | Maurice Grimaud, Gaston Defferre’s Chief of Staff: From La Police malade du pouvoir... to the Halls of Government(May 1981 – July 1984)In May 1981, Interior Minister Gaston Defferre named Maurice Grimaud as his Chief of Staff. In doing so, he recruited a high-ranking civil servant who was at once well-known (indeed, thanks to his action in May 68 and the 1978 commemorations, he was nearly a celebrity) and highly esteemed by his peers and political leaders alike. So unusual was the style in which Grimaud carried out his duties that he came to seem altogether atypical. But the Minister and his Chief of Staff perfectly complemented one another. Despite the many vicissitudes of office and the burdensome duties he had assumed, Grimaud served Defferre in a steadfast and, indeed, faithful manner, accompanying him when the latter was appointed Town and Country Planning Minister in July 1984. |
