Les premières anthologies de guerre en France et en Allemagne de 1914 à 1940 »L’anthologie est un genre très en vogue en France et en Allemagne avant 1914. Passé le choc des premiers mois de guerre, le monde de l’édition retrouve une activité certaine. Les anthologies publiées dans les deux pays pendant la Grande Guerre utilisent les passages les plus émouvants de correspondances de combattants qui montrent leur héroïsme, leur esprit de sacrifice pour la nation. Au sortir du conflit, cette littérature de circonstance est critiquée par les témoins et les chercheurs qui travaillent sur le témoignage combattant. Malgré quelques tentatives, les anthologies s’effacent du paysage éditorial et mémoriel. Le tournant des années 1930 constitue, tant en France qu’en Allemagne, un retour. En France, Jean Norton Cru d’abord puis André Ducasse surtout, donnent un souffle nouveau à l’anthologie, en essayant de donner à comprendre à travers elle la psychologie des combattants. En Allemagne, pour Philip Witkop, le grand promoteur de l’anthologie combattante depuis 1914, ces textes portent un discours nationaliste qui s’impose après 1933. |

| Summary, etc. | Collective Narratives of the Combatant Experience: First War Anthologies in France and Germany from 1914 to 1940Prior to 1914, the anthology was a very popular genre in France and Germany. Once the shock of the first months of the war had passed, publishers resumed this profitable trade. The anthologies published in these two countries during the Great War used the most moving passages from soldiers’ correspondence displaying heroism and a spirit of sacrifice for the nation. With the end of the war, this “convenient” literature was criticized by memoirists and the scholars who studied combatant memoirs. Despite several efforts, anthologies faded from the publishing and memorial landscapes. With the onset of the 1930s, the genre underwent a revival in both France and Germany. In France, Jean Norton Cru and, above all, André Ducasse breathed fresh life into the anthology, using it as a means for shedding light on the psychology of the combatants. In Germany, Philip Witkop – since 1914 a leading promoter of the combatant anthology – saw these texts as a vehicle for the nationalist discourse that was to become ascendant after 1933. |
