| Summary, etc. | RésuméÀ la mort de Franco, en 1975, la mémoire de la guerre civile occupe une grande part de l’espace public de débat, dans le sens d’une légitimation du régime dictatorial mais aussi d’une réévaluation de la tradition de gauche. La transition démocratique sanctuarise rapidement la mémoire de la guerre civile hors du champ de la lutte politique, organisant une forme de silence des politiques mémorielles qui contraste avec la vigueur des souvenirs encore vivaces dans la société. Ce compromis perdure jusqu’à ce que les comptes de l’après-guerre civile viennent à se régler : la redécouverte de l’intensité de la répression franquiste rend caduc le pacte transitionnel qui avait troqué la justice rendue aux victimes du franquisme contre la paix sociale. Pour autant, peut-on parler de « seconde transition », comme le soutinrent les acteurs ? Le surgissement de la revendication sociale pour la « récupération de la mémoire historique » est-il parvenu à clarifier le rapport ambigu que les Espagnols entretiennent avec le conflit civil et ses conséquences ? |

From the Memory of the Civil War to that of the Post-War (1975-2007)”Upon Franco’s death in 1975, the memory of the civil war occupied a major place in public debate, both in terms of the legitimation of the dictatorial regime and the reevaluation of the left’s tradition. The democratic transition led the memory of the civil war to be withdrawn from the field of political struggle, establishing a type of silence within memory policies that contrasted with the vigorous and still enduring memories of the larger society. This compromise persisted until post-civil war scores were settled; the rediscovery of the intensity of Francoist repression rendered null and void the transitional pact that had traded justice for the victims of Francoism in exchange for social peace. For all that, were the actors right in characterizing this as a “second transition”? Did the appearance of social demands for the “recuperation of historical memory” succeed in clarifying the ambiguous relationship that the Spanish entertained with the civil conflict and its consequences? |
