| Summary, etc. | Cet article étudie la figure du « tribunal du public » dans le champ médical du xviiie siècle. En se centrant sur la controverse de l’inoculation variolique, il montre que le « public » possède des fonctions multiples : établir les réputations médicales, produire et certifier des faits et juger les innovations. En annonçant l’entrée dans une ère nouvelle de réflexivité technologique et en promouvant l’heuristique des controverses sociotechniques, la littérature contemporaine sur la démocratie technique réactive, à deux siècles d’écart, présente la vision d’une sphère publique dont la fonction critique s’étendrait aux sciences et aux techniques. |

| Summary, etc. | Medicine and the “public tribunal” in 18th century FranceThis article investigates the role of the “public tribunal” in the medical field in 18th century France. Focusing on the controversy surrounding smallpox inoculations, we show that the “public” played multiple roles : it established medical reputations, produced and certified facts and made judgments about innovations. Two hundred years later, as it heralded the advent of a new era of technological reflexivity and began to promote the heuristics of socio-technical controversies, our contemporary literature on reactive technical democracy offers a view in which the critical function of the public sphere extends to science and technology. |
