| Summary, etc. | La relation entre les organes sensoriels et la cognition humaine est évidente, mais l’organisation, le sens et les conséquences de ce lien méritent que l’on s’y attarde. Les illusions optiques ou sonores, le manque de mots pour exprimer les sensations tactiles ou somatiques sont des exemples de la complexité de cette relation entre perception sensorielle et activités cognitives. Dans ce débat, une autre question s’invite : celle des conséquences sur la cognition de l’instrumentalisation technologique des organes sensoriels ; pour cela, les travaux sur la substitution sensorielle sont éclairants. Ces apports technologiques, hier confinés au domaine clinique, aujourd’hui ouverts à l’usine du futur et demain accessibles à tous, ouvrent la voie vers l’avènement d’un humain augmenté. Si cela est actuellement tout à fait faisable, est-ce souhaitable, raisonnable, et vers quelles discriminations nous dirigeons-nous ? |

| Summary, etc. | The artificial perspective on the sensesWhile the relationship between the sensory organs and human cognition is obvious, the organisation, significance and consequences of this relationship deserve to be investigated in depth. Optical and auditory illusions and the lack of adequate words to describe tactile or somatic sensations illustrate the complexity of the relationship between sensory perception and cognition. Our discussion also raises the question of the consequences of cognition on the technological instrumentalisation of the sensory organs, on which studies of sensory substitution are bringing new insights. These technological advances, previously used in the clinical field only, now being applied in cutting-edge industries and soon to be available to all, are paving the way for augmented humanity. This is now entirely feasible – but is it desirable, is it reasonable, and what forms of discrimination might it entail? |
