| Summary, etc. | Le présent article s’attachera à retrouver et à expliquer la place marginale sinon nulle laissée aux sens en utopie dans les conditions et caractéristiques générales qui en fixent le genre. Produit phare de l’humanisme, l’utopie renonce pourtant aux valeurs du programme de ce dernier et à ses intentions de réhabiliter l’homme dans la complétude de sa définition. La société civilisée qu’elle avance en privilégiant la vue et l’ouïe, sert avant tout un esprit de raison qui emporte finalement l’ensemble dans la mesure, le contrôle et la surveillance. L’utopie devient ainsi un camp d’entraînement à l’exercice et au gouvernement de soi, un lieu d’apprentissage de l’ordre, tendu vers un idéal de perfection sociale et de vie supérieure. Pliant sous cette implacable mécanique sociale, l’homme, diminué car vidé de toute substance sensible, devient alors machine, bien avant que la science-fiction, qui renouvellera le genre utopique, n’ouvre l’ère menaçante des robots et des humains prétendument augmentés. |

| Summary, etc. | Utopia and the regulatory functions of the different sensesThe focus of this article is on discussing and accounting for the marginal, even non-existent, consideration given to the senses in the Utopian genre, under the conditions and general characteristics that define it. Utopia is a flagship humanist concept, yet it foregoes the values of the humanist project and its aim of rehabilitating Man within the fullness of its definition. The civilised society that it promotes, which gives pride of place to sight and hearing, primarily serves the spirit of reason, which ultimately prevails over all else in terms of measuring, controlling and exerting surveillance. Utopia thus becomes a training camp for the exercise and governance of the self, a space in which order is learned and which strives towards an ideal of social perfection and a higher form of life. Man, bending to this implacable social logic, is diminished by being voided of all sensible substance and thus becomes Machine, long before science fiction – which would revive the Utopian genre – opened up the ominous prospect of an age of robots and allegedly augmented humanity. |
