Summary, etc. Cet article entend engager l’incommunication qui semble caractériser la société civile belge dans sa relation à l’islam, mais aussi les rapports entretenus entre musulmans et non musulmans en Belgique, au départ des processus de socialisation et des modalités de transmission et de réception d’aspects culturels qui s’y rapportent. Un détour par l’histoire longue nous permettra de rappeler que si la communauté musulmane de Belgique est composée de personnes issues de vagues récentes d’immigration, les premières implantations musulmanes, et donc les premières rencontres entre l’islam et l’Europe, datent du viiie siècle ; les imaginaires autant que les historiens gardent traces de relations marquées par des antagonismes plus ou moins sanglants : invasions, croisades, colonisations. Cependant, c’est à partir des années 1960 (avec les « primo-arrivants ») que l’incommunication prend ses tonalités contemporaines : à l’indifférence réciproque entre État belge et « primo-arrivants » succédera l’absolue nécessité de transmettre un héritage culturel chez ces derniers, tandis qu’on abandonnera les secondes générations de musulmans au pied d’un mur d’identités multiples à conjuguer. Aujourd’hui, plutôt que la course de chacun pour la « certitude de soi » posée en finalité du processus de construction identitaire, il s’agit peut-être de rendre sa place à l’incertitude au début d’un effort – aussi riche qu’inconfortable – de co-inclusion de nos fragilités.

Summary, etc. This article addresses the uncommunication that seems to characterise Belgian civil society’s relationships with Islam, but also the relationships between Muslims and non-Muslims in Belgium, starting from socialisation processes, patterns of transmission and the reception of related cultural aspects. A historical detour shows that while Belgium’s Muslim community includes people who arrived with recent waves of immigration, the first Muslim settlements – and therefore the first contacts between Islam and Europe – actually date back to the 8th century, a time of more or less bloody conflict – invasions, crusades and colonisation – that left its mark in history but also in people’s imagination. However, it was not until the 1960s (with the “new arrivals”) that uncommunication took on its contemporary characteristics : instead of the mutual indifference that previously reigned between the Belgian State and the “new arrivals”, it suddenly became absolutely necessary to transmit cultural heritage to the latter, which left the second generation of Muslims with their backs to a wall of multiple identities to cope with. Today, instead of racing for self-certainty as the ultimate goal of identity-building, we should perhaps be giving back its place to uncertainty to launch an effort – as rewarding as it will be difficult – towards co-inclusiveness of our different areas of fragility.
