| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | In the xixth century, the parish fabrique was a complicated institution, which was dependent of both civil authorities and Church hierarchy. The renewal of fabriques was partly a result of the logic of State control over religion promoted under the Concordat, but also a consequence of the drive to create a comprehensive administrative mesh covering the French territory. Up to the 1870s-1880s, the fabrique was linked to the administration of the townships, which heavily contributed to the financing of the church steeple, a key monument to village pride. Under the Third Republic, growing anticlericalism led to increasing suspicion toward the fabriques on the part of township administrations which were trying to escape the controlling grasp of the Church. Increasingly strict regulation showed how fragile an institution dominated by the priesthood really was. The Law of Separation between Church and State put an end to parish fabriques, which were replaced by institutions mostly controlled by the Church hierarchy. |
