| Summary, etc. | Autant la figure du garde-chasse et du garde forestier du xixe siècle est connue, autant celle de son homologue du siècle précédent est à peine esquissée. C’est une forme de paradoxe actuel. En effet, la politique forestière, initiée par Colbert avec l’ordonnance de 1669 sur le fait des Eaux et Forêts, est désormais relativement bien étudiée. Mais qu’en est-il des hommes chargés de son application ? Si les Grands maîtres ont fait l’objet de différents travaux et monographies, l’humble garde, le seul homme au contact direct des populations usagères de la forêt reste dans l’ombre. C’est l’ambition de cet article : à travers la figure de Jean Lajaunie, dresser le portrait des gardes de la maîtrise des Eaux et Forêts de Guyenne, mais également celui des gardes au service des seigneurs ou des communautés. Après avoir vu les conditions nécessaires et la manière dont on devient garde, il s’agira de passer en revue les différents aspects du métier. C’est la tournée du garde, son action tant pédagogique que verbalisatrice. Mais c’est également son intégration dans les politiques parfois complexes de surveillance de l’espace rural. |

| Summary, etc. | While the figure of the game and forest warden in the nineteenth century is well known, that of their alter ego from a century earlier is barely even sketched out. It is a modern paradox of sorts. The forestry policy initiated by the Colbert Ordinance of 1669 on the management of Waters and Forests is well documented by now. But what of the men charged with putting it into practice? While the Grand Masters have been the object several works and monographs, the humble warden, the only one in direct contact with the concerned populations, remains a shadowy figure. Such is the ambition of this article: to paint, through the figure of Jean Lajaunie, a portrait of the wardens of the Waters and Forests of Guyenne, but also that of the wardens sworn to Lords or communities. After reviewing the necessary conditions and ways by which one became a warden, this article will focus on the different aspects of this occupation; the warden’s rounds, first, in both their pedagogical and fining functions, but also the warden’s integration within sometimes complex policies regarding the care of rural spaces. |

| Summary, etc. | ResumenCuando la figura del guarda de caza y del guardamonte del siglo xix es bien conocida, la de su homólogo del siglo precedente apenas si se ha esbozado. Es una forma de paradoja actual. En efecto, la política forestal, iniciada por Colbert con las ordenanzas de Montes de 1669, es ahora bastante bien conocida. Pero, y los hombres encargados de aplicar esta política? Los cuadros dirigentes han sido objeto de varios estudios y monografías, pero el guarda humilde, el único hombre en contacto directo con las poblaciones utilizadoras del bosque, queda en la sombra. Eso es la ambición de este artículo: estudiando la figura de Jean Lajaunie, se pretende realizar el retrato de los guardas de Montes de Guyenne asi como de los que son al servicio de señores y comunidades. Después de estudiar les condiciones necesarias para llegar al oficio, tratamos de pasar revista a los pormenores del oficio. Es la ronda del guarda, con sus dos facetas: pedagógica y punitiva. Pero es también su integración en la políticas a veces complejas de la vigilancia del espacio rural. |
