| Summary, etc. | Le non-développement des PME françaises est un phénomène documenté. Dans l’artisanat, secteur pourtant en pleine expansion, des études montrent qu’aux côtés des difficultés environnementales ou conjoncturelles, la « petitesse » des entreprises artisanales est souvent liée aux représentations de leurs dirigeants, souvent défiants face au grossissement ou à la croissance de leur affaire. Basée sur le traitement de plus de 150 heures d’observations et d’entretiens auprès de six dirigeants de petite structure, cette étude fait émerger l’existence d’un rapport direct entre la perception du « risque » chez ces dirigeants et leur attitude (prudente ou proactive) face au développement. Ce risque émerge alors en tant que variable cognitive, liée non pas à l’analyse de données environnementales mais à la relation plus ou moins distanciée que l’entrepreneur entretient avec son affaire et à la place que celle-ci occupe dans sa vie personnelle. |

| Summary, etc. | Many surveys have shown the sluggishness of french medium-size businesses. Although handicraft is booming, the increase enterprises remain very small. Environmental and economic difficulties are to blame, experts say, but also the excessive prudence of directors, who seldom consider increasing their own companies. Over 150 hours spent observing and interviewing six managers of small business have let to this study, which points a direct link between the way they look at risk and their attitude in the face of development. Risk becomes one of the cognitive indicators. The analysis of environmental data is not at stake. The problem is rather how close the company manager stands to his own business and how important the latter is in his personal life. |
