| Summary, etc. | D’Illusions perdues, Balzac a écrit que c’était « l’œuvre capitale dans l’œuvre. » Son héros, le poète Lucien Chardon, occupera le romancier pendant sept ans d’Illusions perdues à Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes. Et le mot illusion se lit partout dans la Comédie humaine. Les illusions, ce sont d’abord celles, touchantes, du jeune provincial et de sa famille. Puis celles que Paris présente au poète ambitieux sous les espèces du journalisme, de l’édition et du théâtre. Lucien se corrompt sans pour autant réussir et rentre dans sa province, vaincu, désillusionné. L’illusion semble être condamnée. Il n’en est rien. Balzac la montre dans La Comédie humaine souvent sublime, féconde, dynamique. Quant à la question posée : « Peut-on vivre sans illusion ? », c’est aux personnages de La Comédie humaine qu’il est donné d’y répondre (trois groupes de réponses). Pour finir, retour à l’auteur qui s’est, toute sa vie, nourri d’illusions, mais a su en jouer pour le plus grand profit de son ambitieux projet. |

| Summary, etc. | Miseries and splendors of illusions in Balzac’s work On Lost illusions, Balzac wrote it was “l’œuvre capitale dans l’œuvre” (master work within work). His hero, the poet Lucien Chardon, will absorb the novelist during seven years from Lost Illusions to Splendors and Miseries of Courtesans. And that word “illusion” appears everywhere in The Human Comedy. The illusions are, first of all, the touching ones of the young provincial and his family. Then they are the ones Paris provides to the ambitious poet under the guise of journalism, publishing, and theatre. Lucien compromises himself without succeeding though and returns home defeated and disenchanted. Illusion is seemingly condemned. But no. Balzac shows it in The Human Comedy often sublime, fecund, dynamic. So, in regards with the question : “Can we live without illusion ?”, The Human Comedy ’s characters answer it (three sets of answers). Last, going back to the author who fed himself his whole life on illusions, but knew how to toy with it, benefiting his most important project. |
