| Summary, etc. | Les cérémonies profanes‚ commémoratives et « patriotiques », sont affectées d’un paradoxe : elles n’ont jamais été aussi nombreuses mais ne rassemblent qu’un public restreint. Les efforts ne manquent pourtant pas pour y convier les populations. Pour que ces efforts ne soient pas vains, deux conditions nécessaires, sinon suffisantes, sont à réunir : que la cérémonie soit porteuse de sens – une claire conception de ce sens par les initiateurs est un préalable à toute organisation de cérémonie – et que ce sens soit exprimé de telle sorte que la cérémonie à la fois parle à l’entendement du public et suscite son émotion ; c’est le but du cérémonial. |

| Summary, etc. | Profane, commemorative and “patriotic” ceremonies are affected by a paradox: there have never been so many of them yet they are attended by few people. Yet every effort is made to draw the crowds. To ensure that such efforts are not in vain, it is essential that two conditions are met, indeed will suffice: that the ceremony has meaning – a clear conception of this meaning by the people initiating the ceremony is a prerequisite in the organisation of any ceremony –, and that this meaning is expressed in such a way that the ceremony both appeals to the public’s understanding and arouses its emotions; this is the aim of the ceremonial. |
