| Summary, etc. | Avec la professionnalisation et l’engagement de l’armée loin du territoire national, alors même que la France ne se connaissait plus d’ennemi, se révélait la spécificité du métier des armes : un rapport singulier avec la mort, non pas tant la mort à laquelle le soldat est exposé que celle qu’il peut être conduit à donner. Cette capacité singulière, à vrai dire extravagante puisqu’à rebours de nos valeurs de civilisation, était véritablement générique, notamment en matière d’éthique. Rédigé voici bientôt vingt ans, le texte reproduit ici est la réflexion que livre le commandant de la circonscription militaire de défense de Besançon/7e db, le général Jean-René Bachelet, en décembre 1997. Nous sommes là, déjà, au cœur du sujet de ce numéro et cette réflexion n’a pas pris une ride, quand bien même a ressurgi l’ennemi. |

| Summary, etc. | The professionalisation of the army and its involvement a long way from France, at a time when France no longer had any known enemies, has revealed the distinctive feature of the soldier’s profession : a distinctive relationship with death : not so much the death to which the soldier is exposed as the death he may be led to deliver. This singular capacity, which is in actual fact extravagant because it runs counter to our values of civilisation, was genuinely generic, especially with regard to ethics. Written almost 20 years ago, the text reproduced here presents the thoughts of the commander of the Besançon military district/7th db, General Jean-René Bachelet, in December 1997. At the time, we were already at the heart of this issue’s topic and, even if the enemy has reappeared, this reflection has lost nothing of its topicality. |
