À plusieurs dizaines d’années d’écart, quelle intention profonde, plus ou moins consciente, a conduit des chefs d’exception à choisir ainsi de tels combats plutôt que des victoires pour magnifier et symboliser l’âme du chasseur, du légionnaire, des troupes de marine ? Ne s’agissait-il pas de mythifier la mission au regard de soldats, de chefs affrontant des situations paroxystiques et s’interrogeant dans leur for intérieur : « L’enjeu vaut-il que je risque ma vie, celles des miens ? » Comment comprendre la transformation récente de la commémoration de ces combats en spectaculaires et gigantesques liturgies, célébrant le sacrifice du soldat comme une eucharistie ? |

Several decades later, what was the deep-down intention, more or less conscious, that prompted outstanding leaders to choose battles such as these rather than victories to magnify and symbolise the soul of the chasseur, the legionnaire or the navy troops ? Was it an attempt to mythicize the mission in the eyes of soldiers and leaders facing situations at the peak of their intensity and wondering : “Is it worth risking my life and that of my men ?” How should we understand the recent transformation of the commemoration of these battles into spectacular, gigantic liturgies celebrating the soldier’s sacrifice like a Eucharist ? |
