| Summary, etc. | RésuméOn considère généralement l’œuvre de Vauban comme éclatée en deux versants, le Traité de l’attaque des places d’une part, le projet de Dîme royale d’autre part. Nous en montrons au contraire la profonde unité aussi bien d’un point de vue méthodologique que d’un point de vue politique. Vauban, quel que soit le domaine étudié, commence en scientifique par une observation approfondie sous forme d’une enquête rigoureuse, se livre ensuite à de multiples expérimentations et peut alors théoriser aussi bien dans l’art des fortifications que pour ses projets fiscaux. Cette pensée est orientée vers l’action : économiste Vauban se préoccupe d’économiser l’argent et les hommes, sociologue il vise à améliorer les conditions de vie de la population, géographe il se propose d’aménager au mieux le « pré carré ». Au terme de cette analyse on peut alors voir la manière dont cette œuvre a été reçue que ce soit par ses contemporains, par les historiens ou par les économistes et ce qui en fait la profonde originalité.JEL : B11, N43 |

| Summary, etc. | Generally we take into account Vauban’s work as divided into two parts: the Traité de l’attaque des places on the one hand, the project of Dîme royale on the other hand. On the contrary we point out the profound unity of this work from a methodological point of view and from a political point of view. Whatever is the field considered, Vauban, as a scientist, starts by a meticulous observation in the form of depth enquiry, proceeded with numerous experimentations and after theorizes in the fortification work and in the tax system. This thought is directed towards action: as an economist, Vauban is preoccuped with money and men’s savings; as a sociologist, he aims at social status improvement, as a geographer, he intends to the “pré carré” improvement. To put an end to this analysis, we consider the way of this work was considered by contemporary, historians or economists and what is its originality.JEL: B11, N43 |
