| Summary, etc. | Il faut rappeler tout d’abord que dans le cadre de sa formation de jeune négociant Jean-Baptiste Say a passé deux ans, avec son jeune frère Horace, chez un négociant à Croydon. En 1786, il part en Grande Bretagne pour se former à la pratique des affaires commerciales anglaises. Ceci en pleine période du développement manufacturier en Grande Bretagne quand l’introduction des métiers mécaniques donne une grande impulsion à l’ensemble de l’activité industrielle. Il est clair que cette première expérience qui a duré deux ans, dans un milieu industriel en pleine expansion, a pu marquer de façon profonde le jeune J.-B. Say qui était doué d’un esprit curieux et observateur. L’autre élément qui fait de Say un expert compétent pour analyser la situation économique en Angleterre et en dégager les points forts et des enseignements pour la France c’est l’expérience accumulée comme entrepreneur dans la création de l’entreprise de filature à Auchy en 1805.Codes JEL : B12 |

| Summary, etc. | On England and on English People : Jean-Baptiste Say’s Expertise on the English IndustryIt should be remembered, first of all, that under his training as a young merchant, Jean-Baptiste Say spent two years with his younger brother Horace, near London in Croydon. In 1786, he moved to Britain to learn the practice of English commercial business. This happened in the midst of the development of manufacturing in the UK when the introduction of mechanical looms gave a great boost to the whole industrial activity. It is clear that this first experiment in an expanding industrial environment, which lasted two years, deeply influenced the young J.-B. Say who was gifted with an inquisitive mind and a talent of observation. Another element that makes J.-B.
