Summary, etc. | Two clinical cases, taken from a residence for dependent elderly people context, are described and analysed in the light of psychoanalyst Alberto Eiguer’s couple typology. Resorting to the explanatory approach, an account is given of the psychological functioning of these two elderly couples defined as entities. A specific and long-standing mode of psychological functioning is brought out for each couple. The first, described as anaclitic, is characterised by inaction in all ways of life and withdrawal. The second, narcissistic couple displays a recurring emotional instability combined with verbal and behavioural violence. Whatever the typology, the two ways of functioning within each entity indicate the achievement of a psychological balance that should be respected and catered for by health and social institutions, even though such ways of functioning prove to be disturbing in such environments. |
