| Summary, etc. | This paper revisits the methods used to understand Muslim women’s beliefs and behaviors. Its core analytical challenge is to make space for the viewpoint of those Muslim women who are increasingly adopting the headscarf. The paper suggests that a shift toward a multidimensional rather than unidimensional perspective on equality is more likely to accommodate the viewpoints of those concerned, namely Muslim women themselves because it requires a realignment of gender against other criteria such as race, religion, culture, and socioeconomic disadvantage. Moreover, it facilitates the inclusion of Muslim women as equal citizens in the European public sphere. |
