| Summary, etc. | RésuméLa thérapie génique de la mitochondrie peut provoquer la modification de la lignée germinale chez les patients et avoir des retombées sur leur progéniture. Par conséquent, certains bioéthiciens sont d’avis que de telles techniques sont à proscrire à cause de la réglementation actuelle sur les modifications des gènes de la lignée germinale humaine (HGM). Dans cet article je discuterai des implications éthiques de la thérapie génique de la mitochondrie. Je soutiendrai que les arguments qui défendent la légitimité éthique de la MDT à la lumière des conséquences « involontaires » pour la lignée germinale humaine sont fragiles. Je soutiendrai le besoin d’arguments disant que les effets secondaires de l’UMD ne changeraient en rien sa légitimité éthique mais qu’il faut plutôt reconsidérer l’éthique de l’HGM en préconisant sa légitimité éthique basée sur une évaluation éthique centrée sur l’intérêt de la personne qui subit une telle manipulation plutôt que de ses descendants. |

| Summary, etc. | Mitocondrial gene therapy may induce the modification of the germ line of the patients and affect their progeny. As such, some bioethicists have advocated that such technique should be banned on the basis of the current regulation on human germ line gene modifications (HGM). In this paper I will address the ethical implications of mitocondrial gene therapy. I will advocate that the arguments claiming the ethical legitimacy of MDT in the light of the ‘inadvertent’ consequences for the human germ line are fragile. I will support the need for arguments saying that side effects of UMD would not affect its ethical legitimacy but rather re-consider the ethics of HGM by advocating its ethical legitimacy on the basis of an ethical assessment which focuses on the interest of the person undergoing such a manipulation rather than his/her descendants. |
