| Summary, etc. | Sulfites are among the 37 excipients with a possible known effect listed by the French Health Autorities (ANSM) that can be found in French pharmaceutical registered drug. They are likely to cause severe hypersensitivity reactions and bronchospasm in intolerant patients.Guidelines on how to deal with sulfite hypersensitivity are limited to “avoidance of wines and products containing large amounts of sulfites”, without specifying the risk – if any – of prescribing and dispensing sulfite-containing medications. In this article, we discuss the use of sulfites in French registered drugs: who are the patients at risk of intolerance reactions, which drugs contain sulfites, in what quantity, and should their administration be monitored in sensitive patients? |

Ils sont susceptibles de provoquer des réactions d’hypersensibilité sévères et des bronchospasmes chez les patients intolérants.Les recommandations générales quant à la conduite à tenir pour les patients sensibles aux sulfites se limitent à « l’éviction des vins et des produits contenant des sulfites en grande quantité », sans précision sur la question de la prescription et de la dispensation des médicaments. Dans cet article, nous faisons le point sur ces substances : pourquoi sont-elles utilisées, qui sont ces patients intolérants, quels sont ces médicaments contenant des sulfites, en quelle quantité, et doit-on surveiller leur administration chez les patients sensibles ? |
