| Summary, etc. | Dans le nord du Vanuatu, les cérémonies mortuaires constituent le complexe d’échanges matériels le plus étendu. Elles durent en principe une centaine de jours et impliquent des dons continus de nourriture, d’argent et de nattes. L’argument de cet essai est que cette mobilisation de ressources matérielles – dans laquelle chaque prestation prend concrètement une forme matérielle – produit des effets qui concernent directement à la fois le chemin du défunt dans le monde des morts et les relations entre ses parents vivants. |

| Summary, etc. | The process of mortuary ceremony is the most comprehensive of the Northern Vanuatu staging of material exchanges. Ideally it goes on for a hundred days and involves continual prestations of food, money and mats. The argument in this essay is that this mobilization of material resourses, each prestation standing as a concrete material performance, produces effects that are directly instrumental both in the path of the deceased towards the realm of the dead and in the relationships between the living relatives. |
