| Summary, etc. | Le référendum néo-calédonien oppose la culture occidentale, communément associée à la modernité, et le monde kanak assimilé à la coutume. Héritage colonial, cette représentation des relations avec les sociétés dites traditionnelles traduit une perspective eurocentrée qui manque à comprendre les sociétés dans leurs propres termes. Le présent article montre que la notion française de coutume entend rendre compte d’une configuration de catégories de pensée et de valeurs qui, dans les langues kanak, ne se réduisent pas aux oppositions occidentales tradition/modernité ou nature/culture. Alors que la crise environnementale planétaire conduit à reconsidérer ces deux oppositions, les cultures kanak – qui n’ont pas attendu le « progrès » ou « l’économie de marché » pour se perpétuer – empruntent à la modernité avant tout pour maintenir la cohérence de leurs organisations et la vitalité de leur vie sociale. |

| Summary, etc. | The New-Caledonia referendum contrasts the Western world—commonly associated with modernity—with the Kanak cultures—related to custom. This portrayal of relations with so-called traditional societies is inherited from colonialism and, as an ethnocentric perspective, it fails to understand societies on their own terms. This paper shows that the French concept of custom aims to present a configuration of Kanak values, and categories of language, that do not correspond to the Western oppositions between tradition and modernity, or between nature and culture. As the world environmental crisis is leading to a reconsideration of these two oppositions, it has to be remembered that “progress” and “market economy” had not been required by Kanak cultures to perpetuate their societies. When they do borrow elements from modernity, it is above all in order to maintain the coherence of their organizations and the viability of their social life. |
