| Summary, etc. | En Nouvelle-Guinée, les chauves-souris ont depuis longtemps un statut bien particulier. Nous nous intéresserons ici aux représentations de ces animaux dans la région du Sepik. Chauves-souris et roussettes sont des intermédiaires indispensables dans les écosystèmes locaux ; l’une par sa capacité à détruire d’énormes quantités d’insectes nuisibles à l’homme et à ses cultures, l’autre par son rôle de pollinisateurs et de diffuseurs de certains végétaux utiles aux humains. Mais des études scientifiques récentes montrent que ces animaux sont également des réservoirs de dangereux virus. De nombreux mythes évoquent l’origine des humains à partir d’ancêtres roussettes. Il existe, dans la région du Sepik et dans d’autres régions de Nouvelle-Guinée, une relation intime entre les roussettes et l’alimentation, mais également avec la gestation et la fécondité humaine. Ce qui peut expliquer les fréquentes représentations de ces animaux dans la culture matérielle des peuples de Nouvelle-Guinée. |

| Summary, etc. | In New Guinea, bat has long had a special status. We shall here examine the representations of these flying animals in the Sepik river region. Bats and flying foxes are indispensible intermediaries in local ecosystems, the one through their capacity to destroy enormous numbers of insect pests of man and his crops, the other through their role as pollinators and disseminators of certain plants useful for humans. But recent scientific studies have also shown them to be vectors in the transmission of dangerous viruses. Numerous myths evoke the origins of humanity as coming from flying fox ancestors. Thus in the Sepik region, and in others Papua New-Guinea region, there is an intimate relation between flying foxes with food, but also with human sexuality and procreation. These peculiarities can explain the frequency of representations of these animals in the material culture of the New-Guinean. |
