520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Vaugelas as politic? In the seventeenth century, the famous distinction made by Vaugelas between good and bad usage has generally been interpreted in sociological terms. Therefore the debates about usage mobilize argumentative schemes which stem from juridico-political theorizations about sovereignty, relationship between roman law and french law, law and custom. When Vaugelas defines usage as “the soverain of the tongues”, this definition, which a political one, excludes form this linguistic sovereignty not only the “plebs”, but also the individuals and the king. A site of sovereignty characteristic of individuals joined in public by their language opens up, distinct from royal sovereignty. To this consciousness, Vaugelas attaches the term “public”, juridical personification of a people whose members are linked by their capacity of thinking over about their speech. |
