520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Toward a description of voice and diathesis: the question of middle voice and its theoretical status The “middle voice” is a characteristic feature of ancient Indo-European languages, notably those where it was best preserved: Hittite, Sanskrit, Greek and Latin (so-called “deponent verbs”). In the Germanic group of languages, Gothic and Old Icelandic have used verbs in - nan, close to reflexive verbs, to express middle voice. Middle voice is best characterized as an intransitive construction along with strong implications on the subject. It appears that all languages have succeeded in keeping this construction alive through specific forms: accusative languages (= Indo-European) have resorted either to reflexive voice or to passive voice and ergative languages (for example, Basque) have developed antipassive constructions.
