520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The French indefinite pronoun on refers in a fuzzy way. It can be interpreted as inclusive as well as exclusive, as referring to one person as well as several ones. When it refers to a group of persons, the limits of the group are often fuzzy. On is therefore the referring expression that fits best the notion of fuzzy group, that is the notion we take advantage of in our project to model the interpretation of some plural references. After some considerations on syntax and semantics of on, we present a study of its referential properties. We question its inclination to refer and its participation to reference chains with varying degrees of importance. We propose to distinguish several levels of coreference, in order to take into account the fuzzy aspect of referring when delimitating and modelling the coreference chains of a text. |
