520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | On the basis of two empirical case studies, one on indexical and one on iconic co-grammatical gestures, this contribution aims to mark out the status of gesture in grammar. The main idea of this multimodal grammar is that words and gestures, although belonging to two distinct semiotic channels, have to be integrated into one single construction. This is in line with the cognitivist hypothesis that grammatical constructions combine linguistic elements into one single schematic conceptual representation. This integration of gesture, typically situated at the edge of the grammatical construction, would thus meet the requirements imposed on cognitive linguistics, and especially on construction grammars, by gesture studies. |
