| Summary, etc. | Le tayo de Saint-Louis est une langue de Nouvelle-Calédonie avec une croissance exceptionnelle à cause de sa situation sociolinguistique privilégiée comme langue d’une communauté scolaire qui s’est transformée en principal système de communication pour la communauté tribale. Après les premières recherches sur les structures grammaticales de cette langue (Ehrhart 1993), j’avais étudié son statut sociolinguistique et sa matrice sociale (Ehrhart 2012). Les créoles ne sont pas une catégorie de langues à part mais des langues dans lesquelles le contact avec d’autres cultures et communautés linguistiques a joué un rôle particulièrement important et a laissé des traces particulièrement visibles. C’est ainsi que j’ai été amenée à définir le tayo, d’une part, comme une forme « extrême » du français calédonien et, d’autre part, comme l’une des langues kanak du pays. |

| Summary, etc. | Tayo is a contact language spoken in and around Saint-Louis tribe in Southern New Caledonia. It shows at the same time common features with standard French or other regional varieties of French and French Creoles in other parts of the globe and also syntactical and semantic elements close to some Melanesian languages. This article tries to give a clearer definition of its position as a go-between, mediator or facilitator in the contact between groups of very diverse origins. This creole experience could well serve as an example for the management of linguistic and cultural diversity in other contexts. |
