| Summary, etc. | Cet article présente une analyse des voyelles postérieures ouvertes, /ɑ/ et /ɔ/, dans une variété d’anglais américain qui est menée sur une quarantaine d’années de « temps réel » mais en visant une période plus courte de 15 à 20 ans. Nous présentons les résultats d’ anovas sur la distance géométrique entre ces voyelles, tout et prenant en compte le sexe des locuteurs, leurs années de naissance, l’année d’enregistrement et les interactions éventuelles parmi ces variables indépendantes. Nous retrouvons des données qui ressemblent plus à une gradation d’âge qu’à un changement linguistique en cours. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper presents a trend study of the low back vowel merger over 45 years of real time, with the primary analysis focusing on a shorter time window of 15-20 years. We present the results of anovas on Euclidean distance measurements between the speakers’ mean lot and thought vowels, taking into account the effects of the speakers’ sex, year of birth, and the time period when a recording was made, as well as potential interactions among these independent variables. We find a pattern that looks more like age grading than language change in progress. |
