Summary, etc. We use 2009 technical data to assess the economic efficiency of three second-generation biodiesel production technologies in the fight against greenhouse effects. To do so, we estimate the cost of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. The environmental impact is definitely positive, but production costs remain high. The cost per metric tonne of CO2 avoided exceeds €100 for all the technologies studied. However, there is a strong uncertainty concerning many parameters. We have not assessed the potential cost-reduction gains from technical progress, which may be substantial.
