520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The Arab world in the mirror of western media. Stereotype and prejudice in the media discourse. the case of the newspaper Le MondeThis article studies how stereotypes interfering with the media discourse, using the newspaper Le Monde and its representation of the Arab world as an example. When covering events concerning the Arab world, the newspaper presents usually bearded figures as typical ones for persons who are susceptible to be terrorists. The image of Arab woman is also degraded. The veil is presented as noticeable symbol for the oppressed women. Through the choice of some vocabulary and photos, in the mirror of Le Monde, the Arab society is presented not only as retrograde but also as a space of terror. The western readers of this newspaper find continuously the same kinds of stereotyped representations. Consequently, He generalizes the received image to all Arab world. When the media reduces the world into simple and understandable symbols, they indirectly propagate a stereotyped idea about the identity of others.
