| Summary, etc. | In his Promenades de Richelieu (1653), Jean Desmarets presents a description of Cardinal Richelieu’s château and its artistic treasures that contrasts with the general aim of the text, which is to guide the reader towards the contemplation of Christian truths by way of Nature’s beauty. An analysis of contemporary théâtre à machines shows that, for Desmarets, the wonder of Richelieu’s château is the sign of a historical novelty legible in the present. It is vital to believe that the Bourbon monarchy, elevated by the cardinal’s efforts, will survive the disorder of the Fronde. |
