| Summary, etc. | When the ambassador Jean Hérauld de Gourville was sent to Madrid in 1669 to negotiate the amount owed by Spain to Louis II de Bourbon, Prince of Condé with the junta, he used his dining table to obtain the good graces of Spanish aristocrats. Thanks to the correspondence and handwritten notes on this delicate Spanish affair that are preserved at the Condé Museum in Chantilly, in the French National Archives, and in Gourville’s and his doctor’s journals, this paper closely analyzes the key role played by this table in diplomatic missions, at a time when French-style tables were acquiring an excellent reputation throughout Europe. |
