Summary, etc. | This text examines the role played by civility in the Cartesian logic of Johann Clauberg. It first seeks to show that this theme is not just a declaration of intent or a contingent ornament to Clauberg’s work, but that it throws a precise light upon the essential and global constitution of his logic (and not only that “hermeneutic” part of it dedicated to the teaching and interpretation of thought). The aim of the study is twofold: First, to extract and define the concept of a “civility of method”, which constitutes a philosophical and epistemic extension of a certain humanist tradition relating to civility, and which is distinct from the rhetorical civility designated within a more specifically literary or aesthetic context. Second, to show that in Clauberg, this “civility of method” serves to render explicit certain orientations indicated by Descartes, rather than being a contribution of Clauberg’s that is heterogeneous to the properly Cartesian component of his logic. It is in an act of profound fidelity to Descartes that Clauberg reaffirms the close relation between philosophy and the civility of conversation between men. |
